Bodymovement was founded in 2012 by Jenna Balfe in Miami,FL. Bodymovement is a creative movement class that fosters connection through movement, play, emotional catharsis and community storytelling. Jenna utilizes her background as a Dance Movement Therapist, Yoga instructor, Dancer, Musician, and Performance Artist to create classes that are fun, fulfilling and physically uplifting.
A typical session is comprised of an fun and unexpected ice breaker, movement/comedy/vocal improv games to get people loose and connected and some stretching and strengthening. Followed by building some movement vocabulary to get ready for the group story development section and we finish of with a performance, so everyone has a chance to feel seen and heard. The last bit is just a closing circle, giving everyone a chance to summarize the experience.
The need to be seen is a major tenet of the Bodymovement philosophy- while movement with others and expanding the creative mind is a huge part, creating a space for participants to hear and see each other is often the most transformative part of the work. While each class has a set structure, it is open to the serendipity of the group energy and ability level. Not only does this make the group accessible to all, but it also creates room for creativity to flow.
This was taken at the end the “Performance as Healing Workshop Series” at The Jewel Box in MIami,FL in October 2025. This series explored personal experiences and emotions while in a group setting. We made masks to perform the work created as a way of separating the self from the issue to then re-examine via performance. We re-mixed the individual performances into group narratives and performed these for each other. The process of self -reflection through detachment, and then coming back together again through performance and group reflection had a profound effect on participants.
